FoamStars, the upcoming live-service 4v4 shooter from Square Enix, launched its open beta on September 29th for players on the PlayStation 5. While the beta gives the first solid look at what players can expect from the game matchmaking issues have made the game far from accessible for many people.
On the game’s official X (formerly Twitter) page, this matchmaking issue has been stated to be due to “concentrated,” users access which has led to matchmaking errors, as well as long loading times. Currently, and unfortunately, the only solution being offered to this issue to to attempt Queueing again. Having had this issue myself, I can say it can be a rather persistent problem. The beta will last until October 1st, 11:59 pm.
Foamstars features two modes and 8 different characters with unique abilities and specials to play as. The first of these modes Smash The Star involves a 4v4 battle in which players try to eliminate 7 players on the other team to be crowned the star while trying to eliminate the other team’s star. The second mode is Happy Bath Survival, a 1v1 match with the remained of the team supporting you from the outside. Listed are also several ‘coming soon’ panels though whether these are meant for day 1 or post-launch remains to be seen.
FoamStars is set to launch on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in early 2024, having been announced during the PlayStation Showcase this Summer. Given how Square Enix has committed to a closer partnership with Xbox there is a possibility an Xbox version could follow closely behind its PlayStation version, though it is unclear if Sony has any exclusivity deals in place for this title or upcoming Square Enix IPs.
