From launch, Cyberpunk 2077 had a very rocky road to the redemption story it achieved in 2023 with the release of the Phantom Liberty expansion. At this point though, all eyes are on CD Projekt Red as they prepare for the several games that they have in development, including a Cyberpunk sequel, as well as several Witcher projects.
As such, the head of CD Projekt Red has expressed the potential of this future project having multiplayer in it. The sequel, Codename Orion as it is known right now, is currently in the conception phase. In a conversation with Reuters, it was stated that there are plans for at least 80 people to be attached to the project by the end of 2024. Co-CEO Michal Nowakowski additionally stated that multiplayer was being considered for the project, but divulged nothing further.
Cyberpunk 2077 has a rocky history with multiplayer since a multiplayer mode was originally planned for the title. This was eventually cut owing to the disastrous launch of the game that saw developers pulled from work on that to patch the base game. A stand-alone multiplayer game was also planned at some point, though that too was eventually dropped.
Very little about the next Cyberpunk game is known at this point, apart from the knowledge that it will feature a grander branching story based on the origin you pick for your character. Other concepts, such as the player’s point of view, are still being worked out as the studio stated neither first-person nor third-person camera have been settled on yet, despite committing to first-person in the first game.
Before that though, the next Witcher project is currently planned to enter development this year and will most likely be the next title from CD Projekt Red. Codename Polaris as it is known, is planned to have up to 400 developers on the project by the end of 2024. Reuters report analysts predict the game will be out by 2026 to 2027.
