Nintendo Switch 2 Release Date and Features Announced During Switch 2 Direct

Nintendo released their latest Nintendo Direct, focusing on the Nintendo Switch 2 like they had promised it would earlier this year. While there are still some unknowns for the system, we now have a release date, some parts of the console’s launch line-up, and an answer to what purpose the new C button will serve.

The Nintendo Switch 2 will feature a bigger screen, upgrading from the 6.2 inches of the original launch Switch to 7.9 inches on the Switch 2. This gives the platform a larger pixel count while maintaining the same thickness of the original console. While this will give better resolution overall, the Switch 2 will use an LED screen rather than the OLED screen that their higher-end Switch uses.

Additionally, the Nintendo Switch 2 will offer up to 120 FPS in handheld mode, as well as Native 4k in its docked mode, though while many games were shown during the event, none were specifically singled out to take advantage of these features. The dock will also be upgraded to now feature an internal fan for when the console is docked. Alongside these, the console features improved audio, an improved kickstand, and Joy-Con that use magnets to click in place rather than the sliding of the previous console. These joy-cons have been confirmed to also function as mice, with several games seemingly intended to highlight this function.

The mysterious C button, as it turns out, is part of an integration for you and your friends to communicate. You can open a system where you and several friends can share your screens, communicate through voice chat, as well as use the new Nintendo Switch 2 camera to interact with each other. The console will boast two USB ports for alternate ways to charge as well as for the new camera to plug into the system while docked.

While the platform will feature backwards compatibility, many games including some yet to be released, will see a Nintendo Switch 2 version launch. One of these is the upcoming Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma and Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar. Games are getting an upgrade for the platform that you already owned can be upgraded through an upgrade purchase as well so you do not need to buy a new version.

The Nintendo Switch 2 will release on June 5, 2025 with 2 versions at launch. One will that just feature the console and all that comes with, while another will feature the digital release of Mario Kart World. These will be released at $449.99 for the base and $499.99 for the one featuring Mario Kart World. The Console itself will feature:

    • Nintendo Switch 2 console
    • Joy-Con 2 controllers (L+R)
    • Joy-Con 2 Grip
    • Joy-Con 2 Straps
    • Nintendo Switch 2 Dock
    • Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable
    • Nintendo Switch 2 AC Adapter
    • USB-C Charging Cable

Preorders will begin next week with users being able to register interest now. Invites to pre-order will be sent out next with a priority on users with 12-month memberships to Nintendo Online and 50 hours of play. After these users receive their invites, other applicants will be considered. All Major Retailers are expected to open up preorders on April 9, 2025.
