After announcing last week that Marathon, the upcoming Reboot of the classic IP from original developer Bungie, would be receiving a lot more information after being relatively radio silent through Sony’s termoutulous dialing back of their previous Live-Serrvice Strategy, over the weekend, we received our first look at the game, including some additional information as to what we can expect.
At its core, Marathon is a three-person squad-based extraction shooter in which the player takes the role of a robotic runner. Players will travel to locations around the planet of Tau Ceti IV, in which they attempt to scavenge for supplies and avoid the things that want to kill them. Made clear through the gameplay trailer, rogue-like elements like dynamic weather and events are stated to make each run the player takes unique. If the player wants to take a risk, they can forgo the Squad cue and play as a solo runner.
Finding supplies and gear seems to form a major part of the loop, with players taking new gear they extract into future runs as part of their arsenal. Runners will also have power that can aid both tactically as well as frontally, allowing players to switch up their approach regardless of what kind of runner they choose.
A lot of elements do feel similar to that of Bungie’s Destiny franchise, which has been the studio’s primary game series for over a decade now. The three-player structure, with Bungie’s signature First Person shooting that is both fast and tight, are on full display with Marathon hopefully feeling like a refinement of the studio.
Marathon also received a release date during this event, now set to release on September 23, 2025, meaning there are only a few months to wait before players interested can jump in. It will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. You can sign up to the Marathon Discord to register for an upcoming closed alpha test.
