During the Nintendo Direct held today, Bandai Namco announced Once Upon A Katamari, the first new console game in the long-running series in over a decade. The last game released in the series was Touch My Katamari, which was released for the PlayStation Vita in 2011. Remakes of the original Katamari Damacy and its sequel, We Love Katamari, have both received remasters on modern platforms in 2018 and 2023, respectively.
Beyond simply seeing the Prince roll his way around a quirky and goofy take on Japan, this time we will see the Katamari travel between multiple time periods of history, such as the Jurassic period. Players will also have power-up abilities, such as a rocket or a time stop, to help players make the biggest Katamari they can. All of this will be accompanied by a soundtrack of new and returning songs from the franchise’s history, all of which should keep the enjoyment rolling on.
In addition to the classic experience, a new mode called Katamariball will also be featured, described as “new four-player competitive mode where players attempt to roll the katamari as big as possible and exchange it for points within a limited time.” Katamariball will feature both online and offline multiplayer. The prince and his cousins will also offer far more customization than ever before to get just the look you want when selecting your character across all modes.
While announced during the Nintendo Direct as being for the Nintendo Switch, Once Upon A Katamari will also release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. It will be released on October 24, 2025. A Nintendo Switch 2 official version was not announced during the event. Preorders go live today on the Nintendo eShop.
