Hollow Knight: Silksong, the long-awaited follow-up to Hollow Knight from Team Cherry, has finally been released after 6 long years of waiting and is selling as well as you would expect for a hugely anticipated title. In fact, it is performing so well that several storefronts have been crashing under the weight of fan desire to finally start playing the game.
Steam, the PC storefront, for instance, has struggled to support the influx of customers arriving at it. Sinksong’s store page had been returning an error page across the initial hours after the game’s official launch, which isn’t common among AAA titles, let alone that of a $20 indie game. This being said, if you were not aware just how much Hollow Knight: Silksong was anticipated in the gaming industry, with it consistently making top ten most anticipated game lists, you had not been reading the room. It was so anticipated that its surprise announcement of a release date caused several games to be delayed out of the window to avoid competition, including the upcoming Demonschool.
Steam wasn’t the only Storefront to see issues, either, with the Nintendo eShop, PlayStation 5 Store, and the Xbox Marketplace all seeing moments of downtime as well as servers struggling to meet the anticipation of Silksong. During the period since its 2019 announcement, the title has become one of the most wishlisted games of all time on Steam, and despite the struggles of the Steam storefront, the game has already amassed 100,000 concurrent players, compared to the 72,916 players of Hollow Knight’s max concurrent player count.
Hollow Knight: Silksong gave very little information away prior to release, even keeping its achievement/trophy list hidden, which players have discovered includes 52 achievements and 53 trophies. Team Cherry also did not provide early review codes for the game to publications, putting everybody on even footing when it comes to discovering what the game has to offer.
