CD Projekt Red appears set to feature some form of multiplayer component in their upcoming sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. Multiplayer was initially planned for Cyberpunk 2077 before being scrapped and made into an intended side project set in the universe, before that plan was scrapped as well. A Posting for the next Cyberpunk title’s lead network engineer features several responsibilities required of the position, including one that states “develop and optimize multiplayer systems, including matchmaking,” with the goal being to “address challenges related to latency, bandwidth usage, and server performance.”
The job listing also states that applicants will need to work “closely with game designers, gameplay programmers, and other departments to integrate network features seamlessly,” and “play a pivotal role in designing and implementing the network architecture and online systems.” The job listing is based out of CD Projekt’s Boston Studio, which is currently in the pre-production phase of Project Orion, the code name for the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, which they entered in May of 2025. This project is a ways out, though, as currently CD Projekt is focused on The Witcher IV, being spearheaded by their Polish development team.
While this is far from a confirmation of Multiplayer being added to the game, CD Projekt spent years experimenting with the feature for the first game, stating that they wanted to include it, as well as making clear the idea was being looked at for the future Cyberpunk follow-up. In fairness, the game had a great universe to include it, with a sprawling city that would have been awesome to explore with a friend. Cyberpunk 2077 famously launched in an extremely troubled state, with the company spending years focus on fixing these issues, a redemption arc that came full circle with the release of the sole DLC for the title Phantom Liberty in 2023. This is why Multiplayer went from a priority post-launch to a wanted feature, to being scrapped altogether.
Senior quest designer Philipp Weber stated back in 2022:
We really needed to look at what were the priorities for Cyberpunk (post-launch). The priority was that the main experience will run for the people in a really good state, and essentially, the switch of priorities meant that other R&D projects had to go away. With Cyberpunk, we wanted to do many things at the same time, and we just needed to really focus and say, ‘Okay, what’s the important part? Yeah, we will make that part really good.
Earlier this year, Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith spoke about the Cyberpunk sequel. He stated that, based on what he was shown, while the game will still feature Night City as a location, a second location will also be included in the game.
