Firaxis, the Developer of the hotly anticipated strategy game Civilization VII, has announced that the title will receive a Steam Deck verification when it releases next month, on February 6th. This news has been revealed via a simple post on X/Twitter that stated “Civ 7 is officially Steam Deck verified. Make history on the go”
This will give PC players picking up the next entry in the long-running franchise on PC two ways to enjoy Civilization VII. Developer Firaxis has promised that this entry “empowers you to build the greatest empire the world has ever known.” It is the first new entry in the series in 8 years, though, like all recent entries, Civilization 6 has kept the conquest going through DLC content post-launch.
First announced during the Summer Game Fest in 2024, it was first rumored to have been in development in 2023. Civilization VII wouldn’t receive a deep dive into gameplay until August of that year when a 25-minute video showcasing gameplay and new elements was first aired. Players who are familiar with the series can expect gameplay like they are familiar with expanded elements. Once again I can expect to aim for a cultural victory but like the Philistine I am, devolve into wanton murder until I am the last one left.
With the title having always seen its core popularity on PC, having the Steam Deck as an option if you are away from your PC but want to keep playing makes this verification an exciting prospect to know for the launch. I expect I will buy it on either PlayStation or PC myself, with the PlayStation Portal also mixing things up in the decision-making process.
Excitingly, Civilization VII is one of the first titles in the series to have its release across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC all on the same day, February 6th for the more expensive Deluxe Edition, and February 11th for the standard edition.
