Square Enix has announced for Dragon Quest Day that the upcoming Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, the remaining two games in the original Dragon Quest trilogy, set to be released, will be available on October 30, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series. Square Enix has additionally announced that the duo of games will also be released on the Nintendo Switch 2, now that companies can announce games for the upcoming Nintendo platform.
These titles were previously wishlistable on a multitude of platforms and have now become pre-orderable digitally, with physical pre-orders available through multiple outlets. The games will feature a preorder bonus of several seed items in-game, used to increase characters’ stats for some early buffs in the title. Should a player have a save file for Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake and use the same account to play these, they will be rewarded with the Marvellous Makeover Kit, which includes a dog suit for Dragon Quest I and a cat suit for Dragon Quest II.
Additionally, it was announced that the games will feature a collector’s edition that will only be available through the Square Store, similar to other collector’s editions they have previously released. It will include a physical copy of the game, a set of acrylic character blocks, the Outstanding Outfit Kit, the preorder bonus, and 2 exclusive digital wallpapers.
While the franchise went on to, similar to other JRPGs, have self-contained entries across their main franchise, these first three games formed one narrative, though each could easily be played without prior knowledge. Dragon Quest III is a prequel to the previous games, in which players take the role of Erdrick, a legendary hero mentioned throughout the first two games. Yuji Horii has stated that releasing them in the order they will be is intentional, with the desire to have players experience III prior to I and II this time around, unlike when initially released.
In addition, Yuji Horii recently spoke about Dragon Quest XII, the next entry in the mainline series that was announced previously, though he has remained silent since its initial teaser trailer. He stated that the game is still in development, hopefully putting to be rumors of its cancellation or development hell, and that development is progressing currently.
