After some speculation this year, Square Enix has announced Dragon Quest VII Reimagined during the Nintendo Direct Today. The title is a remake of the 2000 title Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of a Forgotten Past, the first title in the series to be released for PlayStation. The game had previously been remade in 2013 for the DS, a version of the game that this remake seems set to draw from, with enemies wandering the map and 3D animation, both absent from the original game.
In the classic title, players set off on an adventure with their friends when their father discovers a map fragment on his fishing trip. This map suggests that the world once had a vast number of islands in it, not just the small one that the player calls home now. This then sees players use these map fragments to travel back in time to discover why all these other islands vanished, and rewrite their fate in the present.
The Reimagined will feature a reworked, hand-crafted aesthetic using the original art created by Akira Toriyama as well as an enhanced story over the original that features a streamlined narrative, side quests, and minigames. In addition, several quality-of-life features have been added for a smoother experience, such as a redesigned UI for easier access to information.
It has also been announced that, in addition to the base game, a collector’s edition will be available for pre-order through the Square Enix e-Store. This version will include the physical edition of the game, a steelbook case, a smile slim plush, a ship in a bottle figure, as well as cosmetic DLC.
While announced during the Nintendo Direct event, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined will be coming to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC, as well as the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. It will be available on February 5, 2026.
