Arguably one of the best titles in the Koei Tecmo-developed horror series, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake was announced during the Nintendo Direct held today. The game is a Remake of the 2003 classic that was originally released for PlayStation 2 in 2003 and later for Xbox in 2004, and the latest game to get a rerelease on modern platforms.
In it players take the role of Mio, one of a pair of twin sisters, who find themselves lost in a village that has vanished from the map. Caught in a series of supernatural events and separated from her sister, Mio must use the franchise’s signature Camera Obscura to survive the never-ending night and combat the vengeful spirits that hunt her by photographing and sealing away their souls as she unravels the mystery of these events.
Koei Tecmo has stated that this title is a complete remake of the second game in the series and will feature several improvements, including graphic and audio enhancements, as well as improvements to the core gameplay mechanics, systems, and controls. The Camera Obscura will also offer players “more captivating gameplay experience both during exploration and combat.” These are needed improvements, given that previous remasters in the series tend to show their dated mechanics. The game will have Japanese and English audio, with text in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
No release date was given for Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake during the Nintendo Direct, only stating that it will be available in early 2026, with Nioh developer Team Ninja attached as developer of the Remake, with Koei Tecmo publishing. It will be available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
