*Minor Spoilers For Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles
Chapter 1 on Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles serves more as a prologue to the game itself, predominantly being one big flashback building up to the main events of the game. As Such, you might have expected several mechanics of the game to be locked until you reach the second chapter, which expands what you have on offer. One of these mechanics is the ability to take Errands, represented by an option at the taverns that is an unchoosable question mark until you return to a town and check in on the rumors in chapter 2.
Doing so unlocks the option to tackle errands, a system that is different from taking on side quests, if that is what you were thinking it might take the form of. To tackle an errand, select the option at the bar, then choose the errand you want to take. You will need to choose several units to take part in it, making them indisposed for a set number of days, with each errand having a day range you can choose from as well. These impacts on which units will become unavailable and for how long they will be unavailable. This is the point at which it becomes more beneficial to build out a bigger army through recruitment.

Your characters cannot be killed on errands; however, they can fail, so there are a few things to note. The outcome of a job is impacted by the character levels of those sent on the task. In addition, faith, bravery, and job can also all impact the outcome of a task. To get the best outcome, you might even need a specific job type with a specific skill, so it is important to read the task so that you know exactly what the errand calls for, so you can plan accordingly. You do not need to do anything to progress the errand, though, as time progresses with each movement on the map, the time moves forward by a day, with fights moving time forward a day as well, so you can just wander the map until the task is done, but some optional fights to strengthen your team might be worth it too.
Unfortunately, errands do not give your character exp, so it is not a useful tool to try to level up members of your party at a low level, but you do get rewards for victory. Based on your outcome, you will get Job XP for the character involved and a lump sum of gold for the player’s coin purse. The longer the time you take increases the rewards you can earn, and it has a minimal impact on the success rate of the task at hand. Tasks that are successfully completed cannot be attempted again, thankfully, though if you fail to complete an errand, you will have an opportunity to try again, though some time in-game will need to pass before you do so. Accepting your first errand will also unlock the Inn Demand Work Trophy/ Achievement.
