Coming on the heels of Sony’s big State of Play for 2024, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth had a smaller State of Play to build hype for the game which is now less than a month away. Square Enix showcased two trailers for the as well as a larger deep dive into everything players can expect from the game upon release.
The open world akin to the classic world map was featured in more detail for the first time since the game was announced. This world will consist of multiple large areas connected seamlessly for the player to explore. Within these areas will be familiar locations such as Cosmo Canyon, Costa Del Sol, and the beloved Golden Saucer.
In line with that last one, many mini-games were showcased including many that should be familiar to returning players, with Chocobo Racing being the one I can’t wait to dive into. On top of that, for the first time since Final Fantasy IX, players will be offered a collectible card game known as Queen’s Blood.
Finally, a big focus was placed on the revamped combat system. While most of the fast-paced combat remains intact, emphasis was placed on the diverse playstyles of each character, as well as new tag team attacks, that add new depth to the experience. We also got a much better look at Red XIII as a full-party member and Cait Sith who is set to make his return debut in Rebirth.
Those itching to try the game before it releases are in lunch, as a playable demo was announced for release today. Similar to the demo for Final Fantasy XVI it sounds story-heavy, set during the flashback sequence in Nibelhiem, with both Cloud and Sephiroth as playable characters.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is set to launch on February 29th, 2024 as an exclusive for the PlayStation 5 console. It should be noted that, unlike previous exclusivity partnerships between Square Enix and Sony, this one has been expressly made clear to end on May 29th, 2024 though as of yet no other platforms have been confirmed as planned releases for it.
