Microsoft has announced that Forza Horizon 5, Xbox’s flagship open-world racing game, will make its debut on the PlayStation 5 in the Spring of this year. This is another game to break the confines of the Xbox platform to its lead competitor’s platform following several titles like Hi-Fi Rush last year. This announcement was made by developers Playground Games and Turn 10 Studio.
It was additionally announced that the PlayStation 5 version of the game will be developed by port studio Panic Button, best known for bringing games like Apex Legends, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, and Doom Eternal to the Nintendo Switch. They have handled other ports as well, Porting Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order to current-gen consoles in 2021.
Forza Horizon 5 will launch on PlayStation with all the content that is currently available for Xbox. This will include over 900 cars to choose from, 40 themed updates, and two full expansions. Paid expansions to the title, such as the Hot Wheels-themed DLC from 2022, will also be available, though they will be sold separately from the main game through the PlayStation store. There will most likely be editions of the game through the store at launch for those who want to get everything, similar to that of Sea of Thieves, another title from Microsoft that was ported last year.
A new update, Horizon Realms, will be released alongside the PlayStation 5 version of the game. According to the official blog post from the Forza website, it is stated:
Realms will give players the chance to explore a curated collection of some of the community’s favorite previously released Evolving Worlds, alongside some other surprises. Stay tuned to our channels for more details soon.
Microsoft recently announced that they were the number 1 publisher last year, making half a billion dollars through their published titles, and that 64% of sales of their games came from the PlayStation. Additional first-party Xbox titles slated to release include Indiana Jones And The Great Circle and Doom: The Dark Ages. Phil Spenser has kept it rather vague on what titles might be released across other platforms, saying that there are “no red lines” which implies we can expect more announcements in the future.
