Ghost of Yōtei was released recently to a very positive reception and strong sales from developer Sucker Punch. While the Sony-owned studio is still focused on the title, and with no official plans set for the future of the company on future projects, in a recent interview, it was confirmed that if nothing else, the studio plans to continue being a focused single-game studio.
In an interview with VGC, Sucker Punch co-founder and studio head Brian Fleming stated that the company will begin the process of deciding their next project sometime in 2026, after the Legends Multiplayer is finished and added to Ghost of Yōtei that year. He went on to say not to expect an influx of projects from the developer, as they will still operate one game at a time. He stated during this interview:
The truth is that whatever we do next, whether it’s continuing Ghost or going back to Sly, the decision is really more limited by, again, our cherishing of focus and time to iterate, which means that we really can only do one thing at a time.
He continued by saying:
If we were good at juggling four projects, yeah, we’d have a remaster, and let’s go do one of those, and one of those, and do some fan request, that would be really popular… But we only get to do one thing.
So it kind of has to be your best idea, right? And that’s really clarifying. It’s not like there aren’t 15 good ideas. But you only get to do one. And by the way, you only get to do one about every five years. So that choice is really important. I mean, that is choosing your college and your major every five years.
This is in contrast to other studios in the PlayStation family, such as Insomniac, which was developing Spider-Man 2 alongside the upcoming Wolverine title, which is set to release in 2026, as well as Naughty Dog, set to release their next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, in 2026 as well.
The interesting this not note here is the specific mention of the popular PlayStation 2 series, Sly Cooper, for which Sucker Punch became a recognized name back in the early 2000s. There have been a lot of rumors and a desire for the series to make a comeback, with the last game in the series released in 2013 by Sanzaru Games. While this is not in any way a suggestion, they will bring the franchise back; it is not that, at least, people involved are considering options like that. Sucker Punch would go on to develop the popular Infamous series as well, for which the last title was released in 2014. Similarly, Infamous has been the subject of many rumors suggesting the franchise will return, but as of yet, nothing has materialized.
