Sony has announced that they will be holding a PlayStation State of Play event that will be focused on their upcoming first-party PlayStation 5 exclusive title Ghost of Yōtei from developer Sucker Punch. It makes sense that the company would move to focus on this title, having just released Death Stranding 2: On The Beach in June.
This event will be held on July 10th, a Thursday, and will begin at 2 pm Pacific / 5 pm Eastern time. Fans can expect the event to run around 20 minutes and will feature a deeper look at the game’s core mechanics and gameplay. This State of Play will also be hosted by two of Sucker Punche’s creative directors, working on Ghost of Yōtei, Jason Connell and Nate Fox.
PlayStation described the event as offering a better look at the lead character Atsu’s quest for vengeance, which bears some similarities to classic Chanbara film Lady Snowblood, as well as a look at the arsenal that will help her take said vengeance. It is also stated that the deep dive will feature “new ways to personalize your journey at the edge of Japan, new special modes, and much more.”
Ghost of Yōtei switches up the narrative of the series, featuring a new character at the tail end of the Sengoku period of time, early Edo period, in the very early 1600s. This is in contrast to the 1200s of the previous game, when Jin Sakai fought the Mongolian invasion. In addition to this, the sequel will not technically be set in Japan, being set on the island of Hokkaido, which at the time would be known as Ezo or Yezu, not becoming part of Japan until 1869, when it would receive the name change to what we are familiar with today.
Ghost of Yōtei is set to release on October 2, 2025, and will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive.
