Rockstar Games, developer of the long-awaited Grand Theft Auto VI, has confirmed that the Second trailer was the biggest video launch of all time. The studio told The Hollywood Reporter that Trailer 2 has hit 475 million views across all platforms on its first day. This is a bigger number than any other trailer for a media franchise, including Deadpool & Wolverine, which had amassed 365 million views in its first 24 hours.
Prior to this, the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI reached 93 million views on its first day, having been released exclusively on YouTube. It became the biggest non-music video launch of all time on the platform. Currently, on Rockstar’s official YouTube channel, trailer two is close to hitting the 90 million mark itself as of the time of writing this article on the 8th of May.
Additionally, the song used for the brunt of the trailer, The Pointer Sisters’ Hot Together, has seen a massive increase in streams on Spotify since the release of the trailer. Global Spotify streams for the song, which was first released in 1986, have shot up an astronomical 182,000%. Trailer 1 also had a similar effect on the Spotify standings of its song, Tom Petty’s Love Is A Long Road, which shot up 36,979%.
Expected to be the biggest entertainment launch of all time, Trailer 2 was released shortly after Rockstar Games announced they would be missing the 2025 window they had been aiming to release the game in, instead delaying it to May 26, 2026. The Hollywood Reporter noted that Rockstar is estimated to have spent upwards of $1 billion on the development of Grand Theft Auto VI. While that is a massive amount, dwarfing expenditure on other costly games like Sony’s Spider-Man 2, which is believed to have cost $250 million, Grand Theft Auto is probably the only series that can safely expect turn turn a profit on spending like that. Based on the reception to the second trailer, they are well on their way to a record-shattering launch.
