Sega‘s street-brawling epic about the criminal underworld, Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth has hit a massive milestone, selling 1 million copies in a week of sales since launch. This is a major moment for the series, capping off a large worldwide turnaround for the franchise that began with Yakuza 0‘s worldwide release in 2017.
Both Ryu Ga Gotoku and Sega took to Twitter to announce the news, as well as thank those players for joining hero Ichiban Kusagi on his quest to Hawaii. Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth has also become the most-played entry in the series on Steam, a showcase of just how far the series has come.
It is unclear how long it has taken previous games in the series to reach these sales, however in December 2020 it was announced that Yakuza: Like a Dragon had hit 1.8 million sales with 400,00 of those coming out of Japan. Given that Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth topped many most anticipated games of 2024, seeing the game perform well is unexpected, but just how well it has is probably unexpected even by some of the most optimistic estimations.
As of November 2023, the franchise has sold 21.3 million copies in total. To date, Sega has yet to release numbers for Like A Dragon: The Man Who Erased His Name, the title in the series that was released that month. It would be interesting to know if those numbers give the place of the title as a setup for the events of Infinite Wealth, using former protagonist Kazuma Kiryu as the lead with his traditional beat ’em up combat.
As a fan of the series since its launch, I am very happy to see the series finally getting the respect it has always deserved, becoming a major part of the Sega lineup at almost every showcase. If you haven’t yet sunk your teeth into Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, there is no better time to do so than now, today. As I said in my review of the game, this is the best Like A Dragon has been in a long time, a testament to how the franchise’s newfound popularity allows its developers to go bigger and bolder than ever before even if a few issues in the series remain.
