A new Marvel game that looks like a riff on the Overwatch and Valorant formulas has been announced. Marvel Rivals is being created by NetEase and Marvel Games and it will see players take the roles of their favorite heroes in 6v6 PvP matches to see who reigns supreme. This news comes after a week of rumors of its existence started circling.
Players will take the role of heroes from around the Marvel Universe, using their abilities to help their team come out the victors of each round. At launch, the game will feature 16 heroes to choose from including Black Panther, Storm, and Spider-Man. NetEase has also promised new heroes with each seasonal update, so here is hoping we get Squirrel Girl sooner rather than later.
Currently, the game is only in development for PC with a free-to-play model in place. Akin to the recently released The Finals, Marvel Rivals will also feature destructible environments that will morph the map as the rounds progress. Since characters like The Incredible Hulk are confirmed for launch, it will be interesting to see if powerhouse characters will be built around destruction or full frontal attack.
One of the more interesting twists of the genre present in the trailer is the use of duo abilities that allow two characters to come together and unleash powerful attacks. This feels right at home for a Marvel game, as most often big arcs feature that out-of-the-box team-up you just can’t help but fall in love with.
While hero shooters have become commonplace among live service games, so much so that hits of Marathon possibly changing development to that style were met with mass backlash. However, Marvel lends itself well to the style, and with hundreds of heroes, and costumes that could be added it offers an endless possibility of future content.
