The newest teaser trailer for Capcom‘s upcoming survival horror title Resident Evil Requiem, released by Nvidia to showcase the path tracing present in the game’s PC release via their DLSS 4, has also showcased a tiny bit more of what players can expect. In particular, new environments showcasing a functioning city layout with both cars and pedestrians is shown off, dividing some fans over the direction of the game.
It is unclear just HOW these areas will fit into the final product of Resident Evil Requiem. Linear games have used vibrant locations that are only played briefly before characters arrive when they should, and where gameplay will be centered, though these areas could serve as hub areas in between major locations, something like how Alan Wake II constructed their area design. This is all speculation, though.
The issue here is that several fans took to online to argue against the use of open world areas, something many, such as Sakaixx on reddit who posted “I am immediately alarmed by this. RE Engine and open layout really doesn’t mesh well.”In fairness, from what I could see, these areas look more cinematic rather than intended playgrounds, as many other users pointed out, like Carlossless-World, who said, “Bet it’s just gonna be a 1-minute long sequence where you can only walk forward until you reach the destination/hotel.” It had been previously suggested by Dusk Golem that the game would feature more open area’s then previous titles, suggesting ‘open world type’ areas.
Resident Evil worlds, at least the classic games, used open-ended worlds to have you solve puzzles, running between areas, with Resident Evil 2 featuring some city blocks the player could wander. Most likely, this segment will feature new protagonist, Rose, as she heads to the Wrenwood Hotel, which previous trailers have stated she is investigating. There MIGHT be some traversal of this area, needing to go to a place or two for necessary tools, but even most likely a block or two might be featured. It has beenconfirmed that the popular series lead Leon S. Kennedy will return as a second protagonist with more action-oriented moments, so I could see concerns that this design parallels Resident Evil 6, at least at a glance, but based on other trailers, especially with Rose’s gameplay, such a departure is unlikely.
What we do know is that Rose and Leon will eventually converge on the ruins of Raccoon City, which has not been seen since the games, since it was carpet bombed by the military at the end of 2 and 3. It is unclear as of yet just how much of the game will be set in this new city where the Wrenwood hotel is located.
