Following the gaming rumor mill doing its thing, Nintendo has confirmed that a Nintendo Direct will be held on Friday, September 12. The broadcast is set to begin at 6am PST/9am EST/ 2pm BST, and will run for around a full hour. It should be noted that the Direct will be held on the day before the 40th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. series, suggesting we should be getting some news on that from them. The team behind Super Mario Odyssey just recently saw an equal level of success with their Nintendo Switch 2 title, Donkey Kong Bananaza, which means they might be free to follow up on the critically acclaimed Mario adventure from 2017.

With Mario Kart World being the only Mario title on the Nintendo Switch 2, there appears to be a lack of titles bearing the company’s mascot, something that is unlikely to stay the case. In context, for the 35th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros., a similar showcase was held in which Super Mario 3D World: Bowser’s Fury, the limited release of Super Mario 3D All Stars, home RC kart Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, and a Super Mario Bros Game & Watch were all showcased and announced.
This being said, at an hour long, there is bound to be more than just Mario showing up. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has a 2025 release window still, something Nintendo has suggested it was still on track to meet. Since we are in September now, a release date announcement would make sense during this Direct. Pokémon Legends Z/A and Kirby Air Riders both have release dates this year, with the latter receiving a larger Direct focused on it, but both could pop up with a new look. Some titles like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment and The Duskbloods do not have dates yet, but are high-profile exclusives coming to the platform, making them possible inclusions.
Nintendo Directs are usually very good at shocking with the announcements you don’t expect, not just ones you do, so it should be exciting to see what gets showcased this Friday.
