After being heavily speculated for most of this year, Sony has finally unveiled the PlayStation 5 Slim, their more compact version of the PlayStation 5 system. With us closing in on the 3rd year anniversary of the PS5, it does seem like the perfect time to release it. Better yet, gamers who want this version of Sony’s latest console do not have to wait long as Sony plans to release the Slim in November, just in time for the Holiday.
Both models of the PlayStation 5 Slim will ship with 1TB of internal storage. The biggest addition announced was an Ultra HD Blu-Ray Disk Drive attachment for the digital version of the system, allowing users who bought the digital the ability to upgrade without the need to buy an entirely new system. Additionally, according to marketing the Slim models will not come with a vertical stand, something that came out of the box for the OG model, and will be sold separately.
The Slim model will also use different paneling on the side of the platform, though the company has yet to give an outline as to what that will mean. One of the biggest features of the PS5 is interchangeable panels allowing gamers to buy different ones to customize the appearance of the console. Now it has four side panels, two glossy top ones, and two matter bottom ones.
Another change to this version of the console is that it will feature dual USB-C plugs in the front. USB-C to USB-C has become a more popular format in recent years, with many countries trying to make that the standard. Additionally, the PlayStation VR 2 uses a USB-C to connect to the console.
Sid Shuman, senior director of SIE content communications, said in a PlayStation Blog post:
It will continue to roll out globally in the following months. Once inventory of the current PS5 model has sold out, the new PS5 will become the only model available.
The model is set to be released in November and is priced at $499.99 for the model with a disk drive, and $449.99 for the model without the disk drive. Sony will have a busy few months with tech as their handheld streaming device the PlayStation Portal, will also release in November.
