As part of the 30th anniversary of Pokémon Presents event, the tenth generation of the mainline series of the game has been announced. As always, two different versions will launch alongside each other, in this case Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, which are set to arrive in 2027 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2.
The game will be set in a large open world region that takes heavy inspiration from Southeast Asia. This region will feature a string of islands, as well as underwater locations for the player to explore. Along with this new location will come three new starters to choose from, as is tradition, with a grass-type bird named Browt, a fire-type pomeranian named Pombon, and a water-type lizard named Gecqua.
This first look that we have been given at the world includes a few typographies we can expect to see along our next Pokémon journey. This included some dense jungles, a futuristic resort with water flumes, a mangrove swamp, large swatches of open water, and coral reefs and lava-filled caves. This is the biggest Pokémon experience they have promised thus far.
Closing out the Pokémon Presents event, we were first looked back through the ages of locals the series has had in the past before switching us to a male and female Pikachu in beach attire, ready to welcome us to the tropics of this new region. These Pikachu are apparently named Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu and will appear in the upcoming gamethe pokemon company released a tease asking, “Just how could these Pikachu be involved in your adventure?”
An official description of the games reads:
Developed by Game Freak exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2, these new titles feature an open world to explore, with beautiful, windswept islands and a vast ocean with glittering waves. The Pokémon that live in harmony with this region’s lush environment have developed their own unique ecosystems. During this adventure, you’ll team up with all kinds of Pokémon to overcome both the difficult road ahead and even the forces of nature that block your path at times.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the last generation of games in the series, were announced four years ago, giving this title around a five-year gap from the release of those games before their release. This long length of time could be in response to the critical and fan reception of the previous games, which drew far lower praise than was typical, especially in response to its open world, an issue this game appears to have taken great pains to correct.
Developer Game Freak also has a new IP, Beast of Reincarnation, set to release on August 4 of this year. Unlike Pokémon Winds and Waves, it will release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC, and will feature more high-end graphics.
