Silent Hill 2 Remake, developed by Bloober team who was best known for Layers of Fear and The Medium before this, has crossed the 2 million units sold milestone as the title continues to exceed expectations. Going on sale on October 8th for the PlayStation 5 and PC, the game was quick to hit the Million units sold mark, crossing the threshold in only a few days. This has been suggested to make this the fastest-selling Silent Hill title of all time though this has yet to be officially confirmed.
Konami commented on this success, Stating:
Since its release, Silent Hill 2 has received a multitude of accolades including several ‘perfect’ review scores, multiple award wins and nominations cementing itself as a timeless entry in the horror video game genre.
This news should hopefully bode well for the Silent Hill series, which already has a multitude of projects in the works. These include Silent Hill: Townfall which is still in development by Annapurna Interactive despite a mass walkout of the publisher that took place last year. There is also Silent Hill f, a take on the series set in 1960s Japan, marking the first time the series has not been set in the United States of America where Silent Hill is physically located. However, it has taken on many forms throughout the years. A new film based on the franchise is also in the works, not related to the previous movies that have been adapted from it.
Bloober Team, despite me being fully on board with their involvement after playing The Medium, has a spotty track record at best which had many people concerned about their involvement with a game many consider to be one of the greatest horror games ever made. While their titles Layers of Fear and Observer have been predominantly well-liked, other titles from the studio such as Blair Witch, Basement Crawl, and Layers of Fear 2 had drawn mixed to negative receptions. The studio has been known for passive horror experiences rather than games with combat, which also had people questioning their involvement.
Konami had also drastically debated traditional game-making prior to this, having canceled a previous plan to develop a new Silent Hill, entitled Silent Hills, that would have seen Hideo Kojima at the helm. The two had a very public fallout during the development of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain that saw them part ways, with Kojima later recycling his plan to have Norman Reedus star for PlayStation 4 exclusive Death Stranding. While Konami had some attempts to develop games, they geared heavily toward mobile games like Yu-Gi-Oh!: Master Dual, and live service games like eFootball. Konami also put heavy stock in their Pachino division, which has always been a profitable wing of the company.
Hopefully, this victory lap for Silent Hill 2 Remake is enough to reestablish the publisher in the gaming space and convince them to continue pursuing it. Franchises like Zone of The Enders, Castlevania, and Metal Gear Solid are all poised for a return given the opportunity.
