Sony will be closing Bluepoint Games, a first-party developer best known for high-quality remakes such as Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls, the latter being a PlayStation 5 launch title. Despite having developed several PlayStation -exclusive remakes, the studio was not officially acquired until 2021, following the success of their Demon’s Souls remake.
This news comes via Bloomberg, who have confirmed this to be the case through a PlayStation representative. Roughly 70 employees will be impacted by this closure when it officially comes to pass next month. The spokesman for PlayStation stated to Bloomberg:
Bluepoint Games is an incredibly talented team, and their technical expertise has delivered exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community. We thank them for their passion, creativity, and craftsmanship.
As of last year, Bloomberg had reported that Bluepoint was involved in the development of a live-service God of War game at least up until January of 2025. This project is believed to be one of the two unannounced live service titles that were cancelled in January amid the ongoing commercial failure of Concord, which drastically caused PlayStation to change its approach to live service titles. Following this, Bluepoint had pitched several new projects, none of which seemed to have gotten off the ground before this closure was announced.
Bluepoint was founded in 2006, predominantly by former Retro Studios employees (The developer of Metroid Prime). The studio went on to be involved in several ports and remasters, not just for PlayStation games, as the studio developed Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. The stiudios biggest partnership was with PlayStation as they also developed Gravity Rush Remastered and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. Bluepoint has also served as a support studio for titles like Titanfall and God of War Ragnarok.
This partnership didn’t hit its apex until both Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls, both of which drew praise, which probably helped convince Sony to ultimately acquire the developer. Since the aquisition however, God of War Ragnarok, which was primarily developed by Santa Monica Studio, is the only title they worked on to actually see release.
