The latest co-op action game from Hazelight Studios, Split Fiction, has officially passed the million-copies-sold mark in its first 48 hours on the market. This news was shared via BlueSky, with the official account stating:
The love you all show for our game is overwhelming! 😍 Everyone here at Hazelight are beyond happy – and we can’t stop enjoying your amazing reactions! 🤩
It is important to note here that the official metric of one million copies specifically sold means that far more players could be enjoying it. This is thanks in part to the friends pass included with the game. Since the title requires co-op to be played, instead of forcing both you and a friend to buy it, only one player needs to actually purchase the game, with the other only needing to download it and be invited to play. There is also the local co-op option, meaning households or friends in close proximity only need one copy of the game as well.
This news marks a massive jump from the company’s previous game, It Takes Two, which didn’t hit one million in sales until a month after its launch. That sales number itself was a mark-up from their prior game, A Way Out, with studio head Josef Fares saying at the time it was proof co-op games were still viable, praising the success of the title. Of course, It Takes Two would eventually go on to win Game of the Year from many publications, especially at the Video Game Awards. The success here could be seen as both a culmination of proving their concept across multiple games, as well as exposure brought by their previous games’ critical success.
Since we are not a large publication, we did not receive a review code for Split Fiction, and I am only now able to begin going through it with a friend. Hopefully, a review is coming soon, as I have enjoyed what I have played so far, but that will be happening in the near future.
