Now that CD Projekt Red has declared that the development of Cyberpunk 2077 is concluded with the recently released 2.0, and Phantom Liberty, it looks like the company is ready to announce its next ventures into the Cyberpunk Universe. It appears that besides the already-announced Cyberpunk 2077 follow-up game it also appears that CDPR has planned something described as “a live-action project set in the world of its best-selling video game, Cyberpunk 2077.”
This project is being developed in conjunction with Anonymous Content, the production company behind shows like True Detective and Mr. Robot, as well as movies like The Revenant. Based on what has been stated, the project looks to be a companion piece to the video game series, rather than an adaptation, though it is clearly made within the game’s timeline rather than that of the tabletop RPG that it is based on. CDPR has expanded on their universe prior with a series of novels, as well as the highly acclaimed Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime.
Being referred to as a project, it has yet to be confirmed whether this will be a show or a movie. The universe has a lot of elements that would require CGI so a movie would work, that being said many TV shows have raised their bars in terms of production costs. Adapting for television or streaming services has also helped solve scope issues that these franchises often have when being adapted, with the recent Netflix adaptation of One Piece being an example.
Very little has been announced for the project beyond these facts, just that it will be “developed in close collaboration with the Cyberpunk 2077 creative team.” It is unclear if they will act in an overseeing capacity, or if they will have a larger role in writing or directing it, similar to Neil Druckmann with The Last of Us show adapted for HBO.
