While we are only a few months away from Persona 4 Revival, a remake of Persona 4 Golden, it appears another remake might be on the way. A trailer showcasing a mix of gameplay footage, dialogue, and cutscenes for a remake of the original Persona has been released on YouTube via a new account. This footage was released without warning, showcasing a similar quality to the game to that of the Persona 3 and 4 remakes, both of which were rebuilt with the Persona 5 engine.
According to fan and industry analysis, the video appears to be legitimate; however, the idea that it could be AI-generated is always a possibility. What is unclear is whether this is a remake that is actually in development, or if this was a trailer made for an internal pitch. Neither SEGA nor Atlus have spoken at this time about the validity of this video; however, one series producer had recently raised the possibility of the older games getting the same treatment during an interview.
In August, Persona 4: Revival producer Kazuhisa Wada was asked about this prospect, stating:
At this point, I can’t say for sure. But personally, I think it’s something we should definitely do. I think we have to do it.
Revelations: Persona was first released in 1996 for the PlayStation as a spin-off of the Shin Megami Tensei series, later being ported to the PSP in 2009 with various improvements. Persona 2: Innocent Sin and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, the two individual titles, would then follow in 1999 and 2000 for the PlayStation as well, both also receiving ports to the PSP in 2011 and 2012, respectively.
Persona 3 would act as a drastic departure for the franchise, which up until that point shared more in common with the series it branched off from. This entry would see the inclusion of the franchise’s distinct social link system, a romance option, a shift in combat, as well as a change from a dungeon-crawling maze. From here, the franchise also lessened its emphasis on horror somewhat, though still retaining adult themes and dark tones.
Besides Persona 4: Revival, set to release February 18, 2027, Persona 6 has also been confirmed with a teaser trailer. While no release date has been provided for it as of yet, it is expected to release sometime in 2027 as well. Persona 4: Revival will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version launching later in May. It will be day 1 with Xbox Game Pass.
