Rockstar Games has officially announced Grand Theft Auto VI after a year of leaks and rumors about the game. While this is not the first time that Rockstar has confirmed the game’s existence, this announcement comes with a time frame for the first trailer for the game.
Rockstar has announced they will release their announcement trailer in December 2023, coinciding with the 25th Anniversary of the founding of RockStar Games. This news was announced through a post on Rockstar Newswire, confirming rumors earlier this month that an official unveiling was imminent.
In this release, penned by the studio head Sam Houser, he stated that:
We are very excited to let you know that in early December, we will release the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto.
We look forward to many more years of sharing these experiences with all of you.
In the post, he also points to “December 1998” for the company’s founding, possibly meaning we will get the trailer on the same day the studio was founded. Since the company’s founding wasn’t publically announced until January the next year it isn’t clear which day that occurred though this would be a fun way to reveal it.
Another possibility for an announcement date is the Video Game Awards which are set to occur on December 7. Rockstar, in the past, has preferred to announce their games away from major events, such as their previous titles Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 however with the growing popularity of the event it would not be out of place.
As an employee of Gamestop for the last five years, I personally cannot wait for the trailer. This is mainly due to the number of times I have been asked when the game will come out despite there being no reason I would have that information. Not to mention the number of times I get dragged into a conversation about ‘open-world’ games that are just a thinly veiled way to talk about the Grand Theft Auto franchise in general.
