Announced as part of the Pokemon Presents event for Pokemon Day, the next major release in the Pokemon series will be Pokemon Legends Z-A, and it is scheduled to release at some point in 2025. This will be the first major title from the Pokemon Company and Game Freak since 2022 saw the release of the well-liked Legends Arceus earlier that year, and the next mainline entries Scarlet and Violet ending the year.
The trailer itself offers very little information to go off of about the game. The trailer begins with papers in the in-universe language being translated for the viewer, implying the game will have something to do with urban redevelopment. We then get some interesting views of Lumious City, a major location in the sixth generation of the series, Pokemon X and Y.
Despite bearing the Legends surname, and seemingly being a sequel or follow-up to the 2022 spin-off it doesn’t seem to bear many similarities. The 2022 game featured a Fudal-inspired world set far in the universe’s past, while here the game seems somewhat modern. There is also no indicator in the trailer as to the combat this game will feature, which the spin-off received much buzz for due to its real-time combat rather than the traditional turn-based structure.
The other big question left from the trailer is the release date of 2025 for the Nintendo Switch. Not a week goes by that rumors of a follow-up console come out. While many have taken to referring to it as a Switch 2, the truth is we have no idea if that is what it will be called, or even if one exists though the latter seems inevitable given the age of Nintendo’s handheld console. Current rumors have suggested that Nintendo is stockpiling the system for a March 2025 release to combat scalping, which has become a big issue with the releases of recent consoles.
