Grand Theft Auto VI released its long-awaited second trailer yesterday, which has already amassed over 70 million views on Rockstar’s YouTube account and is building even more hype for the title, which is now set to release on May 26, 2026. Near the end of the trailer, in some small text, it is stated that the trailer is captured on a base PlayStation 5 console, sparking some debate, considering just how technically impressive it is, that a PlayStation 5 could handle it.
Some fans suggested that this footage might be captured on the more powerful PlayStation 5 Pro, or even a PC, which would be slightly misleading, given the game doesn’t have a planned release date for PC at this point. Rockstar has now weighed in on this, saying in an official statement:
Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2 was captured entirely in-game from a PlayStation 5, comprised of equal parts gameplay and cutscenes.
This is sure to make the trailer more impressive, given just how technically detailed it was. Fans across the internet have taken to pointing out elements like realistic sweat on characters like Jason, defused lighting through glass, and cash registers filled with individually rendered change, just to name a few. Of course, most likely the PlayStation 5 Pro will offer the most powerful version of the game as it stands right now, though additional questions abound as to whether even that will struggle to run the game beyond 30 FPS. Regardless, this trailer has me hopeful for when the game releases.
The statement makes clear that some of the trailer show was gameplay, though, since it all looks cinematic, it is hard to tell what is and isn’t. Some people have pointed to the moment at the 25-second mark of the trailer, appearing to showcase a cutscene transitioning to gameplay. There are also several scenes of Jason driving that I would be shocked to learn aren’t gameplay with a cinematic camera, seeming to also showcase improved character interaction with cars, such as Jason resting his arm in the open door window.
Grand Theft Auto VI continues to be a highly anticipated title, and now that we have an official date, it will be interesting to see how the industry shifts to accommodate it. Rumors have also suggested that the title has some kind of marketing deal with PlayStation. Using a PlayStation 5 to capture this footage does give some credibility to this claim.
