Ubisoft Drop Some Sort of Splinter Cell Tease

Ubisoft has dropped somewhat of a tease concerning their long-dormant series Splinter Cell that is sure to create buzz, though for what is anybody’s guess. The last time players took the role of Sam Fisher, the protagonist of Ubisoft’s popular stealth series, was back in 2013s Splinter Cell: Blacklist which maintained popularity with fans of the series, and decent reviews, but never received a sequel in the 12 years since. Ubisoft recently added Steam achievements to Blacklist in what felt like a rare moment of recollection that the series exists.

This teaser, posted via Ubisoft’s official Twitter account, doesn’t really give us anything to go. It features a picture that the publisher states is from Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, released in 2005, and features a straight shot of a no-nonsense Fisher looking straight ahead. An alt description for the picture gives us a little more detail, saying it is a “Close-up of Sam Fisher from Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, showing a stern expression with focused eyes, short dark hair, and a rugged beard, set against a blurred high-tech background,” adding that “He’s locked in.”

We do know that a remake of the original Splinter Cell is in development, having been announced in 2021, though it has remained radio silent since then. This picture, being from an older game, might just be serving to not give away the new look or Graphics of Fisher while teasing this project, or it could be something unrelated. You would be hard pressed to find a fan of the series not excited for a return to the series in any form. The last time the series got any sort of mainstream play from Ubisoft was as part of their free-to-play FPS XDefiant, in which Fisher’s iconic gear served as the basis for one of the factions.

It is also important to note, this post comes only a week before Summer Game Fest is set to kick off. The Geoff Keighley-hosted event features more than two hours of game trailers and announcements from across the industry, so Ubisoft dropping a first trailer for the game there would not be shocking. Since the cancellation of the long-running industry event E3 in 2023, Summer Games Fest has also served as the backbone for several showcases, as well as several Ubisoft Forward Events, though they have yet to announce one for this year.

Ubisoft has seen some struggles over the last few years, starting with a mass exodus of developers and poor sales of several games. With the publisher having released much of the slate of games they had been showcasing, like Star Wars Outlaws, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, it would make sense for them to turn attention to Splinter Cell.
