Resident Evil Requiem Debuts as Best-Selling Game of the Year So far

While January was a relatively slow month for game releases and sales, February served to shake up the sales charts dramatically, thanks to several new releases. This includes the hotly anticipated Resident Evil Requiem, which debuted in the number 1 spot for February, making it the biggest release of the month, and by extension, the year so far. No specific sales figures have been released from Capcom yet as to how many copies the game has sold. Capcom did celebrate 6 million units sold globally, making it the fastest-selling game in the series to date.

Unfortunately, even with a strong month, the new releases did very little to move the needle overall when comparing sales to last year. According to Circana’s most recent monthly report, which is compiled and analyzed by Mat Piscatella, total gaming spending is only up 1% year-over-year. In addition, content spending did not see an increase, and assessorie spending was down 2% from the previous year.

Hardware sales were the only metric that saw a significant shift, led in part by the Nintendo Switch 2, which was released in June of last year. With the Switch 2 contributing to the numbers, compared to last year, hardware saw an increase of 22% to $326 million, with sales of the new console offsetting the sales of the older consoles, which have seen a decline.

Similarly, last year, Capcom held the top spot with the release of Monster Hunter Wilds. We also saw games like Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, Civilization VII, and Avowed release that month and make the charts. By comparison, this year we saw Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, Mario Tennis Fever, and God of War: Sons of Sparta all debut on the charts. Other titles like Diablo II: Resurrected saw a boost in sales, jumping from 195 last month to 13 this month, thanks to the Steam release of the Infernal Edition.
