Following a sweeping restructure at Ubisoft that led to multiple game cancellations, such as The Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake, along with several delays, we now know that Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still in development. This comes from Creative Director Fawzi Mesmar, who has responded to the restructure.
In a LinkedIn post, the former DICE veteran assured fans that the extremely long-in-development Beyond Good & Evil 2 was not affected by the restructuring, something that was previously expected to occur. Mesmar went on to say he was “saddened” by the reorganization effects that have impacted his colleagues’ company-wide.
Mesmar stated:
Thank you for everyone who has reached out to me over the past few days in regards to recent news at Ubisoft. Myself, my team and our project Beyond Good and Evil 2 are unaffected by the recent changes. I would direct you to the official press release for more information around the latest organisational structure.
The press release being refered too was one that laid out plans at Ubisoft to divide up the company into five “Creative Houses” that would see the many IPs held by the company grouped based on genre and audience into one of those houses. Last week, we learned that Beyond Good & Evil 2 would be part of Creative House 4, which is dedicated to fantasy-oriented series. This house also includes Anno, Might & Magic, Rayman, and Prince of Persia.
He went on to state:
Needless to say, I am saddened by the cancellations that has affected my colleagues in other parts of Ubisoft and the industry. I urge everyone — myself included — to offer support whenever and however they can during these times.
We remain committed and focused on delivering a remarkable game for our players to enjoy.
Series creator Michel Ancel started development on a sequel to Beyond Good & Evil back in 2007, along with the Montpellier team responsible for the much-loved original. A trailer was released for this version, but the game would slowly be put on the back burner in favor of other projects at Ubisoft until the game was reannounced in a completely new form in 2017.
This new version was highly ambitious, with functioning solar systems and planets that were suggested to be explorable without the need from trasitioning between them with cutscenes. Development hit several struggles on the development end, being further impacted by the departure of Ancel in 2020 and the death of the Creative Lead, Emil Morel, in 2023. The project is nearing the 20-year mark since announcement, and the most we hear about it, typically, is the promise that it is still real.
Fawzi Mesmar was hired in 2024 to help course-correct the development of the title from previous years. That same year, Beyond Good & Evil 20th Anniversary Edition was released, a remaster of the first game, which included characters set to appear in the sequel, both showcasing at least the continued commitment to the project Ubisoft keeps reaffirming.
