CD Projekt Red has confirmed that 75% of the sales of Cyberpunk 2077 they saw on the Nintendo Switch 2 Console were physical sales, with the other 25% being digital. These data were revealed as part of the company’s latest financial results, additionally confirming that the game benefited from its positioning as a day one release for the latest Nintendo system, but also from its physical media featuring the full game rather than that of the game key cartridges that many other games, like Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut, were released on.
Joint CEO of CD Projekt, Michal Novakovski, stated:
We believe that thanks to its high quality and Switch 2 exclusive enhancements, Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition is well-positioned to benefit from the [Switch 2’s] growing user base. As of June, the vast majority of sales — which is around 70% — came from physical copies sold, and that reflects the strength of our offering
He went on to state that he believed the game saw a benefit from “the entire game, along with its expansion, is fully contained on a 64 gigabyte cartridge, providing a plug and play experience which players find particularly attractive.” This does seem to be reflected in the sales of the physical games, something a multitude of games have struggled with.
Game-Key cards, physical cartridges that contain a key allowing the owner to install the full game through the internet on the console, have proven to be extremely controversial, with game preservationists in particular taking aim at the practice, with Japan’s national library recently announcing their refusal to use them. The practice has been so contested that Nintendo launched a survey designed to poll Switch 2 users about their buying practices for this purpose.
CD Projekt Red has recently announced that Cyberpunk 2, which has yet to get an official title, has entered pre-production. This was confirmed during a financial report in which the company stated that Phantom Liberty, the DLC for Cyberpunk 2077, had hit the 10 million sales milestone, an impressive milestone. Currently, though, the company is focused on The Witcher IV, which they announced last year at the Video Game Awards last year.
