To celebrate the 14th anniversary of Dead Island, originally released in 2011 by developer Techland, a tease was posted confirming that Dead Island 3 was in development. Current developer Dambuster Studios, which saw the troubled development of Dead Island 2 to completion after several other development studios left the project over the years, posted a picture (see below) and a caption to the game’s Steam page that stated: “and the next outbreak is already brewing.”

The message along with this picture read:
It’s been 14 years since Dead Island first splattered onto the scene, stranding players in the blood-soaked paradise of Banoi.
Since then, the zompocalypse has crawled from tropical shores to the sun-drenched chaos of HELL-A in Dead Island 2, where over 20 million Slayers have left nothing but carnage behind.
This isn’t the final cut though. Dambuster Studios are already carving out what comes next. For now, the details stay under wraps, the outbreak is far from over…
The image itself leaves some room for interpretation as to where the next game will be set, only showcasing a man walking along the road with a suitcase, as he has a thumb up to hitchhike. Since both games showcase zombie-infested areas that are closed off in some capacity, this could simply be showcasing somebody leaving the L.A. for the next, with California having arid regions, or suggest the next game will be trading the glitz and glamour of Hollywood for a more rural area in the desert. Las Vegas could also be a logical location for this character to head to.
There is a possibility that this announcement is referring to more DLC content, with the game already having received 2 story expansions in the form of Haus and SoLA. This being said, these were part of the same outbreak featured in Dead Island 2, just continuations of it, so the fact that we are talking here about the next outbreak heavily suggests a new game. Of course, people forget Dead Island: Riptide and Escape Dead Island are things, so this could just be a loose continuation sequel.
Regardless, whatever is being hinted at here, most fans are at least hopeful that with Dambuster attached, a Dead Island 3 will not take the amount of time Dead Island 2 took. Announced at E3 2014, with Yager Development attached to develop and Deep Silver publishing the title, it would not release until 2023, and see studio Sumo Digital replace Yager in 2016, with Dambuster becoming attached in 2019 shortly after Sumo Digital dropped out as well.
