Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance, the co-operative Live Service title set in The Dungeons & Dragons Universe is being shut down and will be removed from storefronts a little over 3 years after it was initially released. The game’s official Steam page has been updated to reflect this, announcing that the game will be fully removed from sale, and its servers will be shut down on February 24, 2025.
A note on the page from the title’s developer Invoke Studios read:
We will be shutting down the Dark Alliance servers on February 24, 2025 and it will no longer be available to purchase starting that day. The base game and all DLC are still available to play in offline single-player by anyone who currently owns it.
Dark Alliance was released on June 22, 2021, being promised as an “exciting, action-driven, hack-and-slash adventure,” and as featuring “iconic monsters, legendary characters, and epic loot.” This promise was left unfulfilled however as the game went on to garner a poor reception upon launch. Currently, it sits on just a 50% approval rating in the Steam reviews for the game.
Formerly known as Tuque Games at the time of the game’s release, it appears that Invoke is moving on to another game that will be set within the iconic universe of Dungeons & Dragons. Nothing specific has been said about the project itself, but publisher Wizards of The Coast confirms it will be developed in Unreal Engine 5, and is intended to be “a triple-A game derived from the Dungeons & Dragons universe.”
Wizards of The Coast appears to be all in on expanding their gaming presence at the moment, most likely due to the astounding success of Baldur’s Gate 3, released 2 years after Dark Alliance, and going on to win most major Game of The Year awards. While it has been made clear Wizards is looking to follow up the success with a sequel, despite Larian having moved on, developer Payday 3 developer Starbreeze is also developing a new co-op game set in the universe as well.
