EA has announced plans to “make some targeted team adjustments,” which is set to include 300 to 400 eliminated positions across the company. As reported by Bloomberg, this also includes 100 positions being cut from Apex Legends and Star Wars: Jedi Survivor developer Respawn Entertainment, and a cancellation at the studio of a follow-up game to the Titanfall series, presumably Titanfall 3. This is not the first time the third title in the series has been reported to have been canceled.
Code-named R7 internally, the Titanfall game was reportedly an extraction shooter set in the mech-filled universe. Bloomberg stated it was not close to release, and a statement from Respawn said that the studio canceled two “early-stage incubation projects”, which would support that notion. As of yet, nothing is known about the other early-stage project that was cancelled, just that it was scrapped earlier this year.
Respawn has stated it plans to refocus efforts on Apex Legends and Star Wars: Jedi, both series EA seems more confident it can profit. Considering Live-Service titles have become more volatile, with last year’s Concord costing an estimated 400 million dollars only to remain in service for two weeks, it makes sense that companies would take a more conscious look at games of the genre. R7 sounded more in line with Apex Legends, a battle royale spin-off set in the Titanfall Universe, so whether this game would bear the Titanfall name or simply connect to it is unknown. Either way, this doesn’t sound like an outright sequel.
Respawn is additionally involved with the upcoming Star Wars Zero Company, and an XCOM-like tactical game from Bit Reactor. Set during the clone wars, it will see players take on the role of a team of shadow operatives taking on high-risk missions in an effort to tip the war effort. Lucasfilm Games is also involved with the game.
These Lay-offs continue the trend that started in 2023 when EA had terminated an estimated 1,130 jobs across its company. In 2024, EA went on to terminate five percent of its company workforce.
