The long-awaited expansion to Elden Ring, entitled Shadow of The Erdtree, has finally received a trailer thanks to its developer FromSoftware, as well as publisher Namco Bandai. The trailer is 3 minutes long and showcases both narrative elements as well as gameplay elements to be featured in the expansion to 2022’s Game of The Year.
In the opening moments of the trailer, we are told of an enemy who uses love to “shrive clean the hearts of men,” and that “There is nothing more terrifying.” Since the world of Elden Ring is already dark, the idea that love is more terrifying than all the hate and murder kinda checks out. The later promise that “blood must spill,” should help recenter players in what they can expect in a world like this.
The gameplay looks in line with the base game but that has never been an issue in FromSoft expansions. Since their games are well known for their difficulty, added narratives usually benefit from a late-game entry point and familiarity with the game which has led to many of the most memorable boss fights and areas even when compared to the base experience. One such fight is shown off multiple times in the trailer with a large animal-headed creature that seems to have a varied amount of moves to contend against.
The most important part of the trailer, or at least I would assume, is that we finally got a release date for Shadow of The Erdtree. It’s time to start sharpening your blades because the expansion is slated to be released on June 21, 2024, for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox One, and PC. Digitally it will be available either bundled with the base game or separately, with preorders for it netting players the Ring of Miquella bonus gesture.
