FromSoftware‘s Game of the Year-winning title, Elden Ring, continues to be a dominating presence in the video game industry. Spurred on by sales boosts following the release of Expansion Shadow of The Erdtree , Elden Ring has now hit a new and pretty impressive milestone.
Publisher Bandai Namco announced the challenging open-world RPG has now sold 28.6 million units, a number that is up 3.6 million from the 25 million it was announced to have sold in June. As pointed out by analyst @zhugeEX on X, this pushes over the 27 million unit threshold that the entire Dark Souls series has accumulated since it was released in 2011. Since Elden ring was released in 2022, that means this sales total was accumulated in just two years and ten months.
Elden Ring, at its core, continues what the Dark Souls series, and its predecessor Demon Souls, set forward. Featuring methodical and punishing combat, players will die over and over again, accumulating the lessons of their failures until they can press forward past tough bosses and areas. this time however marks FromSoftware’s first foray into an open-world that is fully explorable from the moment you step out. This gives players the freedom to tackle challenges in any order, and not feel stuck when a boss is too powerful and they cannot advance until they slay him.
Elden Ring: Nightreign, which will be a stand-alone experience that doesn’t require the base game, is slated to release next year and continue to expand the Elden Ring universe. It will feature a three-player co-op where players drop into a condensed version of limgrave with the goal of surviving, which is easier said than done. This game will feature procedurally generated waves of enemies and bosses, and might possibly draw from other FromSoftware franchises beyond just that of its namesake.
Currently, the future of Fromsoftware has some questions surrounding it. Sony, looking to expand their First-Party titles, has been looking to acquire the studio, though parent company Kadokawa is attempting to have Sony acquire the entire company rather than just FromSoftware in hopes of staving off a hostile takeover. While it appears that the studio employees are happy with this prospect, questions about Sony’s buying power have been brought into question. Both companies have confirmed discussions are taking place, though nothing has been confirmed as of yet.
