After several years of waiting since the first teaser trailer was showcased back in 2020, Playground Games has finally given players their first deep look at their upcoming RPG, Fable, a reboot of the classic series from Lionhead Studios. Interestingly enough, the game does look set to draw a lot from the classic game series, with much of what they showcased during the Xbox Developer Direct.
The game takes a look at the moral question of what it means to be a Hero, and similar to the original trilogy, will begin with the player character as a child. Not only this, Playground Games has confirmed that the hero will be fully customizable, with multiple body and head types you can choose between, rather than only playing as the character they have showcased up to this point.
This version of Fable will also be fully open-world, with the ability to traverse large areas on horseback. Players will return to locations that might be familiar to them, such as the capital city of Bowerstone, where, as a fledgling hero, you will join the Hero’s Guild to begin your journey. This is amid a multitude of typographies to explore and get into fights with familiar enemies like Hobbs. Events throughout the game will also shape the world forever, for better or worse, depending on your actions.
These element bleeds into the most important returning element in the game, which is called The Living Population by the developer. These NPCs have their own schedules, personalities, and names, and all can be interacted with. In addition, the ability to date, get married, and have children also returns, with no limit similar to the older titles in the series.
Fable did not receive an official release date, but the developers did confirm plans to release it in the autumn of 2026. It will be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.
