Good news for Xbox players who have wanted to play the extremely popular MMORPG game Final Fantasy XIV Online, the game will finally be coming to the Xbox Platform after 14 years. This announcement came today during the Final Fantasy XIV Online Fan Fest event, which saw Xbox’s Phil Spencer take to the stage with Square Enix President Takashi Kiryu.
The game was stated to be coming in the Spring of 2024, which will give them a decent amount of time to catch up on all the content currently available before the fifth expansion, Dawntrail, releases that Summer. The game will feature faster loading times as well as 4k support at launch. It also has an open beta coming, which is set to be held alongside the 6.5x patch.
While this would be a big announcement in its own right, the duo stated that this partnership will extend beyond just one game. Kiryu stated:
Starting with today’s announcement and whenever possible, we are planning to bring our games to Xbox for players to enjoy.
This sentiment was similarly stated in an official blog post by Xbox Wire.
It is unclear which games this includes at this time as the company’s two biggest releases current and upcoming, Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, are both currently only planned for the PlayStation 5 console according to Square Enix. Final Fantasy VII Remake, Forspoken, and Octopath Traveler II which all had previously skipped the Xbox platform seem likely options to be seen making the transition.
This is equally a big announcement for Kiryu who had stepped into the role of President at Square Enix in June of 2023, taking over for Yosuke Matsuda. These announcements were likely planned prior to that transition though Kiryu undoubtedly played a significant hand in making these deals come to fruition.
