Foamstars Releases in February, Part of PlayStation Plus Lineup

Foamstars, the upcoming 4v4 competitive from Square Enix, finally looks to have foamed up a release date. The game is now set to release on February 6th. Better yet, it will be available to all tiers of PlayStation Plus membership until March 5th, at which point it will be $30 for everybody across PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

Additionally, Square Enix has also detailed the first year of content they plan to release for the title. This includes new characters, new cosmetics, new maps, and new modes, all of which are standard fair for live-service titles in this day and age. Each season will also include a premium pass for $6 that instantly unlocks new characters and allows you to unlock more cosmetics, again pretty standard fair.

For launch, players can expect three modes that will be available to play – entitled Smash the Star, Happy Bath Survival, and Rubber Duck Party. Each of these game modes will have 3 maps available for them as well. There will also be challenges and optional missions that the player can take part in for big rewards. Finally, a PvE mode is available if you are looking for a break between competitive matches allowing you and your friends to foam up waves of monsters instead.

Originally announced during a State of Play from Sony in 2023, the game instantly drew comparisons to the Nintendo Switch Exclusive Splatoon. These comparisons feature the bright colors of the world as well as the use of guns that serve both a movement function and an attack function. A key difference is that the foam in Foamstars is meant to be piled up to create a larger vertical combat space.

A beta for the game was released last year a for the most part was fun. While I, like many, had many connection issues that hopefully will get fixed, when in a game I found myself enjoying the fast-paced combat, characters, and art direction. Two other games, Rocket League and Fall Guys benefited heavily from their day one release on PlayStation Plus, and with the console in need of more competitive multiplayer games, hopefully the Foamstars can muster a similar response upon launch.

Foamstars Releases exclusively on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on February 6th.
