Geoff Keighly has moved to put expectations in check ahead of the Gamescom Opening Night Live event next week. He stated that this year’s event is “Less about brand new announcements.” This year will mark the 5th year Geoff Keighley has hosted the opening night event for Gamescom, known for a solid slate of big-name games.
While there have been some announcements in the past, the event has always been more commonly a stopping tour on the hype train for upcoming titles and this year seems to be no exception. Keighley described this year’s opening ceremony as an “exciting show with new looks at many announced upcoming games like Alan Wake 2 and Black Myth Wukong.” This announcement should be exciting in its own right as Black Myth Wukong has not participated in many big events, sticking to gameplay drops through youtube up until now.
Those anticipating an event full of big reveals and announcements should keep their expectations in check. Keighley added that:
This year’s Opening Night Live is less about announcing brand-new projects and more about giving fans updates on some of the biggest games due out over the next year.
Two years ago, this stage was chosen for the reveal of the reboot of Saint’s Row, though the game ultimately did not have the best release. More commonly Gamescom is the location where late-year release date reveals or collectors editions are announced, as was the case with both Horizon: Forbidden West and Halo Infinite. It’s looking like that might be the case with the soulslike adaptation of Journey To The West, Black Myth WuKong, which I have been very excited to finally play.
Gamescom Opening Night Live 2023 will begin on Tuesday, August 22nd, at 7pm BST/ 8pm CEST / 11pm PDT and can be watched via Geoff Keighleys’ other popular platform The Game Awards’ on their Youtube or Twitch channels. While no format has yet to be given for the event, last year’s Opening Night ran for around 2 and a half hours.
