*Sony has officially confirmed the release date is March 5, 2026, at $39.99. It is up for preorder on several platforms, including the PlayStation Store.
Marathon, which received an indefinite delay from developer Bungie last year, had already been suggested to be aiming for March 2026 for release, with a price point of $39.99. It seems like they will be hitting this period and price point, according to an Xbox Store Advertisement that listed the title with a March 5, 2026, release date, despite the studio having yet to make any announcement.
Redditor The JuiceBaba was the first to spot this, providing a record of the ad, which has since been deleted. The teaser trailer for the game ends with “Coming March 5, 2026. Pre-order now.” Of course, the ad was quickly pulled with the initial post by TheJuciceBaba take down (though several users were able to rip and mirror the post before its removal), which lends some credibility to the announcement.
Marathon has been a bit of a roller coaster ride during development since it was initially announced back in 2023. Last year, Sony stated that Bungie had failed to achieve sales and user engagement goals, which resulted in a $200 million impairment charge. This was amid the studio dealing with accusations of plagiarism over lifted assets of artwork that were used in the Marathon.
During this time, Pete Parsons, CEO of Bungie, was accused of reckless spending to the tune of $2.4 million, buying 25 classic cars while the company underwent major restructuring that resulted in the loss of 320 jobs. This occurred between the years of 2022 and 2024. In 2025, he announced his departure from the company.
Assumably, the release and subsequent failure of the Live-Service title Concord in 2024 similarly had some impact on release plans for Marathon. Sony had before this planned to heavily invest in live service titles, with 12 initially planned for release by 2025; this number was cut down to only 6 by 2024. Similarly, projects like Fair Games have also seemed to undergo troubled developments.
While Marathon still has yet to receive an official announcement, given the date suggested and the fact that Xbox already has a trailer ready for it, an official announcement seems forthcoming, but we will need to wait and see.
