Microsoft has confirmed that a new title in the Metro series will debut as part of an Xbox First Look showcase event being held this week. Entitled Metro 2039, the game is being developed by 4A Games with Deep Silver serving as publisher. This news follows a leak from NateThe Hate, known for accurately reporting the dates of Nintendo Directs, who had posted to their social media that a new Metro title was in development.
In a statement posted on Xbox Wire, Xbox Wire Editor Will Fulton stated:
Xbox has always been a home for the franchise, and we’re honored to continue that relationship by bringing you a first look at this next exciting chapter.
Beyond the confirmation that the game is indeed set to be shown, very little has been announced as to what fans can expect to see. The event will be broadcast on Xbox’s YouTube channel, with several languages and accessibility options available to watch, but just what we will be watching remains to be seen.
Metro is based on the book series of the same name, written by Dmitry Glukhovsky, and debuted in 2010 with Metro 2033. The series follows Artyom in a post-apocalyptic Russia, fighting to protect his subterranium home from several threats, the most pressing being the monsters that have made the world above their home. It was followed by Metro: Last Light in 2013 and Metro Exodus in 2019. While the last mainline entry was released in 2019, a VR spin-off prequel entitled Metro Awakening VR was released in 2024.
All entries in the series are first-person shooters, so it is unlikely the formula will stray too drastically from that. This said, the 2019 installment saw a drastic departure for the series, replacing the tight, clostrophobic subways with much larger areas to explore with more open-ended ways of completing goals.
The Metro 2039 First Look Showcase will be held on Thursday, April 16, at 10 am Pacific / 1 pm Eastern / 6 pm UK.
