Microsoft has announced that it will be entering into a partnership with AMD to help power the next generation of Xbox products, including its First-Party lineup and future consoles. Microsoft said in a statement that they published they are “Announcing that we’re building the next-generation of Xbox first-party devices and cloud, including our future Xbox consoles, together with AMD.”
Microsoft did not detail what these plans entail, but did promise “next-level performance, cutting-edge graphics, breakthrough gameplay, and unmatched compatibility.” They went on to say that everything currently being worked on will be fully compatible with their users’ existing Xbox library.
Microsoft went on to say:
We’ve established a strategic, multi-year agreement with AMD to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices, including our next-generation Xbox consoles. Together, we’re delivering deeper visual quality, immersive gameplay, and AI-powered experiences – grounded in a platform designed for players, not tied to a single store or device, and fully compatible with your existing Xbox game library.
Earlier this year, Microsoft was rumored to be eyeing 2027 for the release of its next-generation software. At the time, it was suggested that Microsoft was aiming for this hardware to be more PC like than a traditional console, allowing for PC storefronts like Steam, Epic Game Store, and GOG to be accessed and used directly through the platform. The announcement for this confirms at least plans to release additional hardware, though nothing concrete was offered.
In a video, Xbox President Sarah Bond stated that Microsoft was investing in “our next-generation hardware lineup across console, handheld, PC, cloud, and accessories,” with this partnership. Comments made by Bond seem to suggest some validity to these rumors, with her stating:
This is all about building you a gaming platform that’s always with you, so you can play the games you want across devices anywhere you want, delivering you an Xbox experience not locked to a single store or tied to one device.
This year, Microsoft is partnering with the ROG Ally handheld to offer an Xbox-themed one named the ROG Xbox Ally, which will run Windows 11 and features an Xbox button specifically for features revolving around your Xbox library or Game Pass. No price or release date has been confirmed as of yet; however, it is planned to release Holiday of 2025.
