MultiVersus Support To End In May With Conclusion of Season 5

Developer Player First Games has announced that their game MultiVersus will conclude with the end of its 5th season. This will see the game end officially on May 30th at 9 am PST without it returning after a long absence as it had once done previously.

the studio revealed its plans to discontinue its support for the Super Smash Bros.-inspired fighting game in a blog post made on their official website. Season 5 will begin on February 4 and will continue until May, seeing Aquaman available as the latest character through the battle pass. Multiversus launched last year on May 28th, meaning the title will have made it 2 days past its 1st anniversary before support is discontinued.

The Multiversus team thanked fans for their support, stating:

Most importantly, we want to thank every player and person who has ever played or supported MultiVersus. All of us on the Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games teams have poured our heart and soul into this game. We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey.

They additionally went on to make clear for players who supported them and invested in the title that the game will continue in some capacity via an offline mode, saying:

After logging in, a local save file will be automatically created connected to your PlayStation Network, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store account, allowing you to enjoy the game offline with all earned and purchased content moving forward.

Player First also stated that real money transactions would be no longer accepted starting today. In-game currency options such as Gleamium and character tokens will still remain however until May 330th for players to purchase the new battle pass. Multiversus will be delisted from all platforms at this time as well.

New the brawler is being discontinued following news that the game has been seen as a financial failure at Warner Bros. Discovery. Back in November during a financial call, the company stated that it had performed far worse than expected, resulting in a $100 million writedown for their gaming sector. This number was compounded by the release of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, which was also seen as a financial failure by the company, making their total close to $300 million.

During that call chief financial officer Gunnar Wiedenfels said:

We took another $100 million plus impairment due to the underperforming releases, primarily MultiVersus this quarter, bringing total writedown year-to-date to over $300 million in our games business, a key factor in this year’s studio profit decline.

Warner Bros. Games does have some light on the horizon however, 2023 saw the company release the hugely successful open-world game Hogwarts Legacy which far exceeded the company’s expectations. A sequel to the title is currently in development and might coincide with the planned Harry Potter TV series in development at Max.
