We are only a few weeks into 2024 and already there are a lot of games to look forward to. One of the early releases this year, and one of the most anticipated is Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the sequel to Final Fantasy 7 Remake. A retelling of the Final Fantasy 7 story across multiple parts, players can expect to leave the city of Midgar and begin to explore many of the locations present when the original title introduced us to its world map (which makes a return).
In anticipation of the title’s impending release next month, Square Enix has released a new trailer that reminds us that yes, it was Sephiroth.
The trailer itself opens with a modern retelling of the events of Nibelheim, which players will remember is a significant event that carries through the story. In the original game a flashback shortly after Midgar delves into these events but with the remake deviating from some beats of the original it remains to be seen if it will play out early in Rebirth or later.
Most importantly, the trailer makes clear that Sepheroth will have a significant role in this title, something I look forward to seeing given his increased role in Remake despite having little relevance toward the tail end of the Midgar section. However, that isn’t to say that other villains such as the Turks or Rufus Shinra will not appear as well, expect much of what you loved about the original to come back in full force.
The trailer also makes clear that ‘Those destined for rebirth do not fear the unknown’. Of course, this, a reference to the subtitle of the game, will play a significant role in the events of the narrative, of which players familiar with the original game are aware.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be swinging its large swords, staffs, fists, and kunai exclusively on the PlayStation 5 when it launches on February 29th, 2024.
