Nintendo has finally pulled back the curtain on its newest console, and the successor to the Nintendo Switch, now officially known as the Nintendo Switch 2 (R.I.P Super Nintendo Switch). This news was unveiled in an official first-look trailer posted by Nintendo, which while light on detail, did confirm the platform will finally release in 2025.
The trailer makes clear that the system is meant to be more of a progression of the extremely popular Nintendo Switch platform, starting with a Switch and slowly transforming it into a Nintendo Switch 2. This begins with the new sleek black design, contrasting against the Grey/ Red and Blue the original launched with. We also got our first look at the snap on Joy-Cons, the new stand with a wider radius, as well as the new layout of both buttons and speakers on the system.
Additionally, during the later portion of the video, we get a glimpse of what appears to be the next entry in the Mario Kart series as Mario and friends drive through a track seemingly inspired by Route 66. While Mario Kart 8 remained a very popular gamer on the Nintendo Switch, with tons of content added to the game, it was a port of the WII U version of the series, with the Nintendo Switch itself never receiving its own entry.
It was also confirmed here that the Nintendo Switch 2 will feature backward compatibility with cartridges seemingly being inserted the same way as on the original. It was stated that not ALL titles will be backward compatible, though there was no indication as to which titles will not be able to be played.
Nintendo announced it will hold several Nintendo Switch 2 events around the world where players can go hands-on with their next platform. These events will be listed below and a Nintendo account will be required to participate.

Recently, accessory developer Genki was present at CES 2025 showcasing accessories they planned to release for the console, with mockups of the system despite Nintendo having yet to announce it. According to insiders, this was not something Nintendo had permitted, and are looking for possible avenues to go after the accessory maker legally.
